Pretenders – Back on the Chain Gang

Grit and grief forged into rock resilience

When Back on the Chain Gang was released on 17 September 1982, it wasn’t just another single—it was a breathtaking return amid tragedy. Written by Chrissie Hynde, the song became a defiant expression of grief and perseverance following the untimely death of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, just days after bassist Pete Farndon had been dismissed for drug-related issues.

The recording sessions began at AIR Studios in London on 20 July 1982, with Chrissie, then three months pregnant, and drummer Martin Chambers joined by session players Billy Bremner, Robbie McIntosh, and bassist Tony Butler. The hammering “chain gang” chant was created using studio weights, layered to haunting effect by assistant Jeremy Allom.

Once completed, the song quickly became the Pretenders’ biggest U.S. hit, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100and climbing to No. 4 on the Mainstream Rock chart. In the UK, it reached No. 17, while also charting in Australia. Critics praised its deceptively upbeat tone that belies themes of loss and resilience.

Chrissie Hynde described the song as an urgent continuation of life amid grief: “Back on the Chain Gang sounded like a Pretenders song… it was sort of like Ken Kesey: Either you’re on the bus or you’re off the bus, and I felt like Martin and I were still on the bus.”

The music video, directed by Don Letts, was the Pretenders’ first with the new lineup. It blended surreal and symbolic imagery: Chrissie walking with Martin Chambers across London Bridge, jump cuts of airborne figures, and stark visuals of laboring chain gangs in chalk quarries. The result was a haunting visual echo of the song’s themes.

Over time, Back on the Chain Gang has retained its emotional potency. It continues to be a centerpiece in live shows and was performed acoustically with The Duke Quartet on the Pretenders’ 1995 concert special The Isle of View.
