Alan Jackson – Gone Country
When Gone Country was released in November 1994, Alan Jackson was already a major name in country, and this song gave him a tongue-in-cheek look at how many artists were switching to country to chase success. Written by Bob McDill and produced by Keith Stegall, the track paints stories of a lounge singer in Vegas, a folk rocker in New York, and a composer commuting from L.A. — all turning to country music as their fallbacks.
The single became his third number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, holding the top spot for one week in early 1995. The track appeared on his album Who I Am and helped cement Jackson’s reputation for blending traditional country with playful social commentary.
The music video was shot in multiple locations: New York City (atop 622 3rd Avenue), Las Vegas, Knoxville, and concert scenes in Evansville, Indiana and Knoxville, Tennessee. Directed by Michael Oblowitz, the visual juxtaposes city skylines — including a flyover of the Twin Towers — with performance shots from stadium settings.
In later years, Jackson’s live performances of Gone Country have drawn from its satire, sometimes highlighting the irony of those chasing trends rather than authenticity. The song also took on a life beyond country: it was parodied by Cledus T. Judd as “Gone Funky,” and Jackson himself adapted it to “Ford Country” for a commercial campaign.
