In June 1974, Grand Funk Railroad stormed Los Angeles’ famed Forum with a powerhouse live performance that captured the band at its arena-rock peak. Their cover of “The Loco-Motion”—already a No. 1 hit earlier that spring—sent the crowd into a frenzy, proving how the trio could transform a pop classic into a heavy, high-octane anthem.

“The Loco-Motion” was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and first recorded by Little Eva in 1962, when it topped the U.S. charts. More than a decade later, Grand Funk Railroad revived the song with a hard-rock twist. Produced by Todd Rundgren for the album Shinin’ On (March 1974), their version climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1974, staying there for two weeks. It also topped the charts in Canada and reached No. 5 in Australia, extending the song’s legacy as one of the few tracks to hit the top in multiple decades.

Where the original version leaned on danceable pop charm, Grand Funk pushed the track into the arena-rock era. Loud, riff-driven guitar from Mark Farner, Mel Schacher’s thunderous bass, and Don Brewer’s pounding drums gave the song a muscular backbone. The familiar lyrics about joining in a dance craze gained new life when blasted through giant sound systems to tens of thousands of fans.

On stage at The Forum in Los Angeles, June 1974, the trio leaned into their reputation for sheer volume and energy. Farner’s searing vocals carried above the instrumental storm, while Brewer’s relentless drumming locked the groove that made the audience move in unison.
