Little Richard – Good Golly, Miss Molly
Piano like a starter’s pistol—Little Richard turns a two-minute blast into forever
By early 1958, Little Richard had already bent radio to his will; “Good Golly, Miss Molly” made the case all over again. It’s rock ’n’ roll stripped to momentum and spark: right-hand triplets skating across the keyboard, a left hand thumping time, band locked to the front of the beat. The record doesn’t build so much as detonate—two minutes that feel like the start of a long sprint.
The sound is all attack and clarity. Specialty’s New Orleans crew frames Richard’s voice with slashing guitar, a walking bass line, hot snare, and tenor sax that barges into the break like a second engine. Nothing is ornamental; every part points forward. Over it, Richard shouts, rasps, and testifies with total authority, turning a simple address to a whirlwind woman into a masterclass in projection and timing.
The writing keeps out of the way. Short lines, internal rhymes, and call-and-response hints give the chorus its snap; a handful of images do the heavy lifting, and the rest is feel. That economy is why bands learned it by muscle memory—bars and basements everywhere could make it roar without a manual.
Cut at J&M Studio and issued by Specialty, the single powered up the charts—Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, a strong R&B showing, and a UK Top 10 to boot—adding another pillar to a run that defined the first wave. It became a template as much as a hit: the kind of 45 younger groups tried on until it fit.
There’s film to prove the staying power. At The London Rock ’n’ Roll Show, Wembley Stadium (August 5, 1972), he drives the song like it was minted that morning—piano as launchpad, cape and sequins for punctuation, and a stadium finishing every phrase. Fourteen years after release, the charge is unchanged.
