The Doors – Light My Fire (1967)
Released in April 1967 as the debut single from The Doors, “Light My Fire” became the band’s breakthrough hit and their signature song. It topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 7 in the UK, transforming The Doors from a local Los Angeles act into one of the defining rock bands of the late 1960s.
The song began as guitarist Robby Krieger’s first completed composition. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix’s Hey Joe and the Rolling Stones’ Play with Fire, Krieger brought an early folk-flavored draft to the band. Drummer John Densmore suggested adding a Latin rhythm, while Jim Morrison contributed a verse and part of the chorus (“Try to set the night on fire”). Ray Manzarek added the now-legendary Bach-inspired organ introduction, and Densmore proposed the single snare-drum hit that opens the track.
The original album version, running over seven minutes, features extended organ and guitar solos influenced by jazz improvisation. For radio play, Elektra Records issued a shorter, 2:52 single edit, which helped push the song to No. 1 in the U.S. in July 1967.
“Light My Fire” was the first major songwriting contribution by Krieger, who was just 20 years old. Morrison had encouraged him to write “something universal,” leading to lyrics that combined love, passion, and mortality.
Despite its success, Morrison later wrote in his notebooks that he disliked the song and resented its dominance in the band’s catalog. Nevertheless, it remains a cornerstone of their live shows and of 1960s rock history.
