Freddie Jackson – You Are My Lady
Freddie Jackson’s signature love song was written by another man, for that man’s own wife.
The song that put Freddie Jackson’s voice into a generation of weddings was a love letter from someone else. Barry Eastmond, a Brooklyn keyboard player without a single production credit, wrote You Are My Lady as a tribute to his own wife. Jackson, a Harlem church singer who had spent years recording other writers’ demos, sang it as though the vow were his. On the Billboard chart dated October 5, 1985, it was the No.1 R&B record in America. Jackson died on October 5, 2026, forty-one years later to the day.

He was not an overnight discovery, whatever 1985 looked like from outside. Born in Harlem on October 2, 1956, Jackson sang gospel at White Rock Baptist Church from childhood, and it was there he met Paul Laurence, who would become his producer and writing partner. He worked New York nightclubs with Laurence’s ensemble, went west to front a funk band called Mystic Merlin, and came home to sing demos at Hush Productions. Melba Moore heard him in a club and hired him as a backing singer. Capitol, her label, was the one that eventually signed him.
That apprenticeship is what Eastmond’s song needed. Laurence wrote the first single, Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake), and it held the top of the R&B chart for six weeks in 1985. The follow-up was a different kind of record: no story, no rival, no regret, only a man telling a woman what she is to him. Sung by someone less sure of himself it would have been greeting-card material. Jackson had spent a decade learning to make another writer’s feeling sound first-hand, and he delivered it without a wink. It was Eastmond’s first professional credit as a producer. Capitol released the single on August 13, 1985.
Two No.1s in One Year
Billboard’s R&B chart ranked it No.1 for two weeks beginning October 5, 1985, giving Jackson two chart-toppers from his first two singles. The Hot 100 took it to No.12, the highest pop placing he would ever have, and the Adult Contemporary chart to No.3. Britain’s Official Charts Company had it at No.49. The album, Rock Me Tonight, topped the R&B album chart and went platinum. Eastmond has called it the record that changed his life, and the two men went on working together for decades.
For Jackson it opened a run that few singers of the period matched on R&B radio. A Little Bit More, his duet with Moore, went to No.1, and so did Tasty Love, Have You Ever Loved Somebody, Jam Tonight, Hey Lover and Do Me Again. He won an American Music Award for Nice ‘N’ Slow, earned Grammy nominations, and sang Love Survives with Irene Cara for the film All Dogs Go to Heaven. Pop radio never fully claimed him. Late-night R&B radio, the format people called quiet storm, belonged to him for the better part of a decade.
The Last Chapter
In September 2024 Jackson told his fans that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease, and he joined the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness of it. His family announced his death on October 6, 2026. He was 70, three days past his birthday. Their statement remembered a kind and generous man whose songs had been the soundtrack to other people’s love stories. Moore, who had heard him first, called him a great singer and an even greater friend.
The family’s phrase is the accurate one. You Are My Lady began as one husband’s gift to one wife, written by a man who needed someone else to sing it. Jackson’s gift was that he could take a devotion that was not his and hand it on, intact, to anyone who needed the words. Countless couples have since borrowed it the same way he did. That is why it will outlast the charts it once topped.
