One Direction – What Makes You Beautiful

He typed the line into his phone’s Notes app while his wife complained about her hair in the next room.

Savan Kotecha was in a London hotel bathroom. His wife Anna was in the next room, straightening her hair and saying out loud that she looked ugly, and he called back that she was beautiful and didn’t even know it. Then he stopped, opened the Notes app on his phone, and typed the phrase in before he lost it. He carried it into a writing session with two Swedish producers a few days later. Everything that followed — the record, the band, most of a decade of pop music — came out of a note he made on a toilet.

The band he wrote it for had lost. One Direction finished third on the seventh series of The X Factor in 2010, behind the winner Matt Cardle and the runner-up Rebecca Ferguson. They had not auditioned as a group at all — five teenagers had each failed as solo contestants, and the guest judge Nicole Scherzinger suggested putting them together rather than sending them home. Syco signed them for two million pounds after the show ended, which at the time looked like an expensive bet on the losing act.

Kotecha wrote the song with Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk, and the three of them made a deliberate decision about what it should sound like. Every pop record in 2011 was chasing the same dance production Rihanna had made unavoidable. Kotecha’s stated logic was to do the exact opposite, so they built it around a guitar riff and handclaps — closer to a power-pop record from thirty years earlier than to anything else on radio that year. The last piece was a line about the way she flips her hair, added at the eleventh hour and also about Anna.

Stockholm, then Malibu

They recorded it at Kinglet and Cosmos Studios in Stockholm in 2011, with Yacoub and Falk producing and Serban Ghenea mixing, layering five voices into something that sounded like more than five voices. Harry Styles texted Kotecha after hearing the finished lines to say he thought there was something in it. The band, by their own account, were relieved — they finally had a song they were happy to go out with.

John Urbano directed the video in Malibu rather than the other locations that had been floated, and worked without choreography. He put the five of them on a beach, told them to run and mess about and kick a ball around, and shot what happened. He has described the experience as spending time with five kids who had no idea how famous they were about to become. It premiered on August 19, 2011, after a five-day teaser campaign, and went on to pass a billion views.

What it did

Radio got it first, on August 10. Syco released the single on September 11, and it entered the UK chart at No.1 on 153,965 first-week sales, which set a Sony pre-order record. It topped the Irish and Scottish charts, reached the Top 10 in Australia, New Zealand, Belgium and Canada, and made No.4 in America. It stayed in the British Top 10 for eleven weeks. In February 2012 it took the BRIT Award for Best British Single, and that September it won three MTV Video Music Awards including Best Pop Video.

Four more albums followed before the band went on hiatus in 2016, and all five members went on to solo careers. Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024. He was thirty-one.

The song is still the one people mean when they say One Direction, and the reason is not complicated. Kotecha built it around a sentiment that costs nothing and works on everyone, and then had the sense to write it plainly. A man told his wife she was beautiful, she didn’t believe him, and he wrote it down.
