Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble – Pride And Joy (Live at Montreux 1982)
Before Stevie Ray Vaughan was a household name, he walked onto the stage at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 17, 1982, and tore into Pride and Joy. The crowd, expecting polished jazz, didn’t know what hit them. Some even booed — but that raw, swaggering shuffle became the spark that would launch Vaughan from Texas clubs to international acclaim.
In the video, you see the Vaughan who would soon take over the blues world: hat pulled low, Fender Strat hanging high, hands snapping and sliding across the strings with a ferocity that made the guitar feel like an extension of his body. With Double Trouble behind him, the rhythm is tight and relentless, pushing Pride and Joy into a storm of Texas blues fire.
That night in Montreux was more than just a gig. In the audience were Jackson Browne, who offered Vaughan free studio time, and David Bowie, who later invited him to play on Let’s Dance. Within a year, Texas Flood introduced Pride and Joy to the world, and by the end of the decade, songs like “Crossfire” and “Cold Shot” had made Vaughan a crossover star with both blues and rock fans. Eric Clapton became one of his greatest supporters, and the two shared a stage the night Vaughan tragically died in 1990 at age 35.
Even after his death, Pride and Joy lived on as his signature. At Vaughan’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2015, his brother Jimmie Vaughan, Doyle Bramhall II, Gary Clark Jr., John Mayer, and Double Trouble performed the song in tribute — proof that its shuffle still burns across generations.
Watching the Montreux 1982 performance today, it’s not just a young guitarist proving himself. It’s the moment Stevie Ray Vaughan’s career ignited, a performance as raw, imperfect, and brilliant as the blues itself.
