Ace of Base Music Videos
Swedish pop group · 1990–present
Ace of Base came out of Gothenburg in 1990: siblings Jonas, Linn and Jenny Berggren and their friend Ulf Ekberg, who had started making music in the Berggren family basement. Swedish labels passed on them, so the Danish label Mega Records bought their recording of "Wheel of Fortune," and producer Denniz PoP reworked a demo into All That She Wants, which topped the charts in 13 countries. Their debut, Happy Nation (1992), carried by Happy Nation, became The Sign when Arista repackaged it for America, and it was the best-selling album of 1994 in the US. Their pairing of reggae rhythm with Scandinavian pop melody also gave Max Martin his first American hit, as co-producer of "Beautiful Life."
The Sign spent six weeks at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and finished as Billboard's top single of 1994, and the album was the first to produce three No.1s on the Mainstream Top 40. The Bridge (1995), Flowers (1998) and Da Capo (2002) kept them on the European charts, and their cover of "Cruel Summer" returned them to the US Top 10 in 1998. Linn withdrew from the spotlight in the late nineties and left in 2007. Jenny stepped away in 2009, and Jonas and Ulf made The Golden Ratio (2010) with new singers Clara Hagman and Julia Williamson. The group has never officially disbanded, and in 2024 it entered the Swedish Music Hall of Fame.
