Boston – More Than a Feeling
Origins & Creation
Tom Scholz, Boston’s mastermind and a former MIT-trained engineer, spent six years crafting demos in his home basement, playing nearly all instruments himself—only the drums and vocals were by collaborators.
The song was inspired partly by The Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renee”, borrowing both emotional tone and even chord progression, along with nods to classic riffs like “Tend My Garden” and “Louie Louie.”
Marianne, central to the lyrics, was a real person—Scholz’s older cousin, who inspired the wistful, nostalgic longing in the verses.
Recording & Production
After Epic Records signed Boston based on those demos, label executives initially pressed Scholz to re-record in a professional studio. He held firm on staying in his basement, ultimately agreeing to have tracks transferred to L.A. for mixing—preserving his unique sound.
Vocals from Brad Delp were recorded in one of the most stunning takes of rock: soaring, high-energy, and largely done in one go. Delp’s layered harmonies paired with Scholz’s guitar work became Boston’s signature.
Release & Cultural Impact
Released in September 1976 as the lead single from Boston’s self-titled debut album, the track peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The debut album exploded—selling over 2 million copies by January 1977 and eventually reaching more than 17 million worldwide.
The song is now a classic rock staple, frequently featured in “500 songs that shaped rock” lists. In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked it at #212 among the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”
