Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In the Dark
Released on May 9, 1984, “Dancing In the Dark” was the lead single from Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. album. Written overnight after producer Jon Landau pushed for a hit single, it became Springsteen’s biggest chart success at the time, reaching #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. With its blend of rock urgency and dance-friendly synths, it captured both frustration and the desire to break free.
The video, directed by Brian De Palma, was filmed at the Saint Paul Civic Center in Minnesota during the opening of the Born in the U.S.A. tour. Its most memorable moment is when Springsteen pulls a young woman from the crowd to dance with him on stage. The woman was actress Courteney Cox, then unknown to audiences. That cameo launched her career and turned the video into one of the decade’s most iconic. Cox’s dance moves even inspired actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who later blended Springsteen’s stage steps with Eddie Murphy’s “White Man Dance” to create the Carlton Dance on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
“Dancing In the Dark” won Springsteen his first Grammy (Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male, 1985) and the MTV Video Music Award for Best Stage Performance. In the 1985 Rolling Stone readers’ poll, it was voted Single of the Year. The song’s cultural reach extended even further when, in 1990, Bob Dylan covered it once at Toad’s Place in New Haven. The performance was famously ragged — Dylan flubbed much of the lyric — but it remains the only known Dylan rendition of a Springsteen song.
The song’s afterlife has proven just as remarkable. In July 2024, it returned unexpectedly to the UK Top 40 nearly 40 years after its original chart run, thanks to England football fans. Supporters of midfielder Phil Foden adapted the chorus into a terrace chant:
Can’t start a fire / Can’t start a fire without a spark / Phil Foden’s on fire / He’ll be playing the Germans off the park.
This spontaneous fan tribute carried Springsteen’s anthem back into contemporary charts, reaffirming its enduring relevance.
