Lita Ford – Kiss Me Deadly (Live at Wembley 1989)
“Kiss Me Deadly” was released in 1988 as the lead single from Lita Ford’s platinum album Lita. Written by Mick Smiley and produced by Mike Chapman, it became Ford’s breakthrough solo hit, peaking at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Lita album reached No. 29 on the Billboard 200 and established Ford as one of the few female stars to break through the hard rock and hair metal scene of the late 1980s.
The live performance recorded at Wembley Arena in London in 1989 captures Ford at the peak of her solo career. The show was part of her 1988–1989 world tour, later released on VHS as Lita Ford – Live. Her delivery of “Kiss Me Deadly” became a highlight of these concerts, mixing her guitar work with commanding stage presence in front of a major international crowd.
The song’s opening lyric — “I went to a party last Saturday night, I didn’t get laid, I got in a fight” — carried personal resonance. According to Kim Fowley, who assembled The Runaways in the 1970s, Ford had been beaten up not long before her audition for the group. While written years later by Smiley, the lyric mirrored Ford’s toughness and gave the song a sense of authenticity when performed live.
Beyond its chart success, “Kiss Me Deadly” has appeared in several films, demonstrating its continued cultural reach:
-
Captain Marvel (2019)
-
Patti Cake$ (2017)
-
Romeo & Juliet vs. The Living Dead (2009)
-
The Kite Runner (2007)
-
Angels with Angles (2005)
More than three decades later, the Wembley live video remains a document of Ford’s defining years as a solo artist, showcasing the energy and edge that made “Kiss Me Deadly” her signature song.
