Background & Creation
Michael Jackson wrote and recorded “Bad” in 1986, co-producing it with Quincy Jones. The song appeared on Jackson’s landmark seventh studio album, Bad (1987). Originally, Jackson envisioned the track as a duet with Prince, but Prince declined, citing discomfort with the opening lyric, “Your butt is mine.”
The track marked a turning point in Jackson’s public image. No longer the shy, soft-spoken pop star of Thriller, Jackson crafted a new persona in leather, buckles, and chains. The slang “bad”—meaning “seriously cool”—was a perfect fit for the rebellious but accessible tone of the song.
Critic Barney Hoskyns captured this transformation in his review of the album:
“With his gossamer-delicate, surgically sculpted features, he looks like a beautiful Latin girl trapped inside an outfit from Mad Max II.”
The song’s lyrical inspiration was reportedly drawn from the story of a young man who left the inner city for a private school but was killed after returning to his old neighborhood. While often linked to the death of Edmund Perry, Jackson’s narrative softened the tragedy into a broader message about identity and defiance.
Music Video
Martin Scorsese directed the short film/music video for “Bad,” which runs nearly 17 minutes in its full version. It was written by Richard Price and features Wesley Snipes in an early breakout role as the leader of a rival gang. Jackson plays Darryl, a private school student returning home to prove he’s still “bad.”
The production carried Scorsese’s cinematic stamp. His top collaborators—including cinematographer Michael Chapman (Raging Bull), producer Barbara De Fina (The Color of Money), and editor Thelma Schoonmaker—joined the project. Darryl’s mother was portrayed by renowned singer Roberta Flack.
Scorsese shot the video in New York City during a break from filming The Color of Money. Its gritty subway setting, stylized choreography, and gang themes drew comparisons to West Side Story, merging Jackson’s pop sensibility with cinematic storytelling.
Impact & Legacy
“Bad” became one of Michael Jackson’s defining singles. It showcased his evolving style, cemented his creative independence, and contributed to the Bad album’s historic achievement of producing five consecutive U.S. #1 singles—a record unmatched at the time.
The song also introduced Jackson’s trademark vocal exclamations, notably the stretched-out “shamone” (originally “come on”), which would become a recurring feature in his later performances.
