Right Said Fred – I’m Too Sexy
When “I’m Too Sexy” arrived in July 1991, few could have predicted that a cheeky joke born in a London gym would launch one of the decade’s most memorable pop exports. Brothers Richard and Fred Fairbrass, joined by guitarist Rob Manzoli, took Richard’s offhand line — “I’m too sexy for my shirt” — and, with producer TommyD, reshaped it into a tongue-in-cheek dance-pop anthem that poked fun at vanity and self-obsession.
Initially recorded in a rock style, the track came alive once it was rebuilt with pulsing electronic beats and a sly guitar riff borrowed from Jimi Hendrix’s “Third Stone from the Sun.” The result was a tight, two-minute-fifty burst of camp confidence, delivered with a wink rather than a sneer.
Released on Tug Records in the UK and Charisma in the U.S., the single exploded. In Britain, it climbed to #2 on the UK Singles Chart, where it stayed for six weeks, held off the top only by Bryan Adams’ record-breaking ballad. In America, it went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Right Said Fred one of the few British acts to debut with a chart-topper there. Similar success followed in Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Luxembourg and Austria.
The music video, directed by James Lebon, cemented the group’s reputation for playful self-mockery. Shot on a shoestring budget, it featured the Fairbrass brothers strutting down a mock runway, striking exaggerated poses while photographers and models played along. Its camp humor resonated across MTV and Europe’s music channels, amplifying the song’s tongue-in-cheek message.
By the end of its run, “I’m Too Sexy” had gone Platinum in the U.S. and Gold in several other markets, selling millions worldwide. Though sometimes labeled a novelty hit, its cultural afterlife has been considerable: nominated for an Ivor Novello Award in 1992, regularly included in ’90s pop retrospectives, and even interpolated decades later in major releases like Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.”
What began as a throwaway line at the gym turned into a global smash — proof that sometimes, the silliest ideas make the strongest pop history.
