Uriah Heep – Easy Livin’
Uriah Heep – “Easy Livin’” (Live on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, 1974)
When Uriah Heep stepped onto the stage at Shepperton Studios in March 1974, they were already riding high as one of hard rock’s most dynamic bands. That night’s performance, broadcast later that year on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, captured the group at the height of their powers—raw, energetic, and unfiltered. Among the set’s highlights was their signature hit “Easy Livin’,” a song that had cemented the band’s international breakthrough just two years earlier.
The Story of “Easy Livin’”
Written by keyboardist Ken Hensley, “Easy Livin’” was released in 1972 on the landmark album Demons & Wizards. Clocking in at just over two and a half minutes, the track is a blast of pure urgency, driven by Lee Kerslake’s thunderous drumming, Ken Hensley’s organ riffs, and the soaring vocals of David Byron. It became Uriah Heep’s only U.S. Top 40 single, peaking at #39 on the Billboard Hot 100, while also finding major success across Europe.
Even decades later, the track remains one of the band’s most enduring songs, second only to “Lady in Black” in popularity. Its straightforward power and irresistible energy made it a live favorite, often igniting Heep’s concerts from the very first note.

The Rock Concert taping showcased Uriah Heep’s classic lineup: David Byron (vocals), Mick Box (guitar), Ken Hensley (keyboards/guitar), Gary Thain (bass), and Lee Kerslake (drums). Their setlist for the broadcast included not only “Easy Livin’,” but also fan favorites like Stealin’, Love Machine, and So Tired.
The performance quickly became legendary—not just for the music, but also for its chaotic, rock ’n’ roll spirit. Stories from the show include a streaker running on stage during “So Tired,” Byron reportedly forgetting lyrics during “Stealin’,” and Kerslake leaping over his drum kit during the encore medley. The spectacle perfectly captured the reckless energy of the mid-’70s rock scene.
Legacy of the Performance
Originally aired in September 1974, this broadcast helped introduce Uriah Heep to a wider American audience. Years later, the full session was officially released as Live at Shepperton ’74, preserving this iconic moment for fans old and new.
For many, this remains the definitive filmed performance of Uriah Heep’s golden era—a snapshot of a band who could combine virtuosity with showmanship, and turn even unpredictable chaos into rock history.
