Harry Styles – Coming Up Roses
It began as a Christmas song and turned into a song about love not lasting, and now couples propose to it.
Harry Styles meant Coming Up Roses to be a Christmas song. He started writing it in December 2025, got two lines in, and dropped the idea, keeping a seasonal turn of the clock in the opening and taking the rest somewhere else entirely. The song he finished is about the impermanence of love. During his 30-night run at Madison Square Garden, couples have been getting engaged to it. On October 26, 2026, Styles released the song’s official video, and the clip leans into that contradiction rather than resolving it.

The song is the eighth track on Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally., Styles’s fourth studio album, released March 6, 2026. Most of that record lives on the dance floor, with disco and club rhythms driving its singles. Coming Up Roses is the exception: a ballad built on piano and strings, placed about two-thirds of the way through as the album’s quiet center. It is also the only song on the album Styles wrote entirely by himself.
He has been unusually open about what it means to him. Talking to Zane Lowe around the album’s release, he called it “one of my favorite things I’ve ever done.” Critics singled it out as the emotional center of a record otherwise built for movement, and heard in his voice a vulnerability the dance tracks keep at arm’s length. The title borrows an old English phrase for things going well, the same one Stephen Sondheim and Jule Styne turned into Everything’s Coming Up Roses for Gypsy in 1959. Styles uses it with a shadow: the good news arrives already doubting that it will hold.
From the album to the Garden
Fans adopted it quickly. Styles performed it on Saturday Night Live on March 14, 2026, eight days after the album’s release, alongside Dance No More. It became a fixture of his tour setlist, played at the piano. During the Madison Square Garden residency it turned into a proposal soundtrack, with couples getting engaged in the crowd while he played. A song about impermanence became the one people chose to mark a permanent promise.
Styles announced the video almost under his breath. Seated at the piano at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, October 24, he mentioned that a Coming Up Roses video was coming, and a promo image the next day confirmed it for October 26. The clip is the fourth from the album, after Aperture, American Girls and Dance No More, and the first built around a ballad. In it, Styles and a group of people practice dance steps in a small theater, and he leads hopeful and hopeless romantics alike through a waltz while a love story comes apart.
That is the argument the video makes, and the reason the song has outrun its origins. Coming Up Roses began as a holiday tune, became a song about love not lasting, and ended up as the music people propose to. Styles never settles which reading is right. He wrote it alone, and the video leaves the contradiction on the dance floor, where his audience has already made the song its own.
