Hot Chocolate – Every 1’s A Winner
The title came from the producer. The tune came from a child crying in another room.
Errol Brown had a title and nothing to put under it. His producer, Mickie Most, had handed him the phrase, and by Brown’s own account he was getting nowhere with it. Then he heard his eldest daughter, a small child at the time, crying somewhere in the house. She was crying in a rhythm. Brown stopped, listened, and built the melody of Every 1’s a Winner on the pattern of it.

He needed the song to be his. Brown had formed Hot Chocolate in London in 1968 with bassist Tony Wilson, and the two wrote the band’s early hits together, You Sexy Thing among them. Most signed the group to his RAK label in 1970 and produced everything, and for the rest of the decade they placed a single on the British chart every year. By 1977 Wilson was gone. That June the band finally reached No.1 in Britain with So You Win Again, and the song was not Brown’s at all. Russ Ballard had written it. The next album would take its name from a track Brown wrote alone.
The melody is only half of what people remember. The other half is not sung. It is the buzzing, distorted figure that opens the record and answers Brown through every chorus, and a good many listeners have always assumed it is a synthesizer. It is a guitar, played by Harvey Hinsley, who had joined in 1970. Accounts differ on exactly which box he ran it through. Nobody disputes whose hands were on the strings. The album cut runs 4:49, and the label trimmed it to about four minutes for British radio and shorter still for America.
Bigger Abroad Than at Home
RAK released the single in Britain early in 1978, and the Official Charts Company ranked it at No.12, a solid result for a band used to them. Then the record did something their singles rarely did. It kept traveling. Infinity Records issued it in the United States, and nearly a year after its British run, in early 1979, Billboard’s Hot 100 had it at No.6, with the soul chart placing it at No.7. Canada’s RPM chart took it to No.5. Only You Sexy Thing, a No.3 in 1976, ever did better for them in America.
Two pieces of film survive from that first year. The group made a promotional video in which they perform to the album version, and their official channel re-released it on October 9, 2026. They also took the song to West German television, appearing on ZDF’s Disco in a broadcast dated June 12, 1978. Brown is the center of both, tall, shaven-headed and entirely at ease, with Hinsley’s riff doing its strange work behind him.
Brown died on May 6, 2015. The song has outlasted him comfortably, which says something about how it was put together. On paper it is a slogan, three cheerful words passed from a producer to a singer. What keeps it from sounding like one is the source of the tune. A song that tells every listener they have won was written to the least triumphant sound a household makes, and that is why it has never felt like an advertisement.
Here is the band on West German television, ZDF Disco, broadcast June 12, 1978.
