Six Words, Three Weeks At Number One, And A Title Changed Thirty Minutes Before Recording

Released in September 1975 as the third single from the album Save Me, “Fly, Robin, Fly” spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 starting November 29, becoming the first German act to top the American charts since Bert Kaempfert in 1961. The song simultaneously hit number one on the Hot Soul Singles and Hot Dance Club Play charts, an extraordinary crossover achievement. It sold over one million copies and earned gold certification from the RIAA in December 1975. For a track containing only six different words, this was commercial domination nobody could have predicted.

The single won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance at the 18th Annual Grammy Awards in 1976, a categorization that puzzled many since the track clearly featured vocals. The Recording Academy apparently considered the vocals so minimal they classified it as instrumental. In the UK, it peaked at number 28, but across continental Europe the song dominated, hitting the top five in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Billboard later ranked it among the biggest disco hits of the decade, crediting its pulsating bassline for paving the way for more sophisticated electronic dance music.

Hungarian-born composer Sylvester Levay and German lyricist Michael Kunze created the track as part of their Munich-based studio project, originally conceived as Silver Bird Convention before shortening to Silver Convention, named after Levay’s nickname. Kunze had spent the late 1960s writing German protest songs before pivoting to pop production and advertising jingles. They had assembled the debut album Save Me in just four hours using anonymous session vocalists, deliberately leaving songs unfinished because they decided lead vocals were unnecessary. The song was originally titled “Run, Rabbit, Run” until Levay objected, worried about sharing a name with a Volkswagen model. Just thirty minutes before the session singers arrived, he heard a similarly titled song on the radio and quickly rewrote the lyric to “Fly, Robin, Fly.”

The track was recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich with moonlighting string players from the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra adding those sweeping arrangements. The bass is relentless and hypnotic, the drum pattern stripped to just kick and snare in metronomic insistence. Around those elements, Levay layered bongos, guitar ripples, organs, and strings. The session vocalists who actually sang on the record were not the women who appeared on the single cover or in promotional appearances. Levay and Kunze needed presentable entertainers, so they recruited Penny McLean, Ramona Wulf, and Linda G. Thompson as the public face of Silver Convention. The women lip-synced to voices that weren’t their own.

The song appeared on the Save Me album, which Omnivore Records finally reissued on CD in the United States in 2024, marking its first American CD release in nearly fifty years. Follow-up single “Get Up and Boogie” also contained only six words and spent three weeks at number two in June 1976. After that, the hits dried up quickly. “No No Joe” stalled at number 60, and subsequent singles failed to recapture the magic. Linda G. Thompson left and was replaced by New Yorker Rhonda Heath after an open casting call. By the time disco collapsed in the late 1970s, all three public faces had left the music industry entirely.

Herbie Mann recorded a jazz flute cover in 1976 for his album Bird in a Silver Cage, arranged by Levay himself. Australian string quartet Bond covered it in 2004. The song appeared in Boogie Nights and Carlito’s Way, soundtracking 1970s nostalgia for new generations. Levay moved to Hollywood in 1980 and spent two decades scoring action films like Cobra, Navy Seals, and Hot Shots!, working with everyone from Sylvester Stallone to Whoopi Goldberg. He later reunited with Kunze to compose hit German-language musicals including Elisabeth and Mozart!, which continue touring internationally through 2025.

Two men in Munich decided a song didn’t need more than six words. They changed the title half an hour before recording because one of them didn’t like sharing a name with a car. They hired different women to pretend they’d sung it. The Grammy voters couldn’t decide if it was instrumental or not. And somehow, against every logical expectation, those six words spent three weeks at the top of the American charts. Sometimes pop music makes no sense at all, and sometimes that’s exactly the point.
