Wham! – Freedom
In the mid-’80s pop boom, Wham!’s “Freedom” crystallized the duo’s leap from pin-up charm to sleek, blue-eyed soul authority.
By autumn 1984, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley were reshaping teen-idol hysteria into adult pop clout. “Freedom,” released as the campaign around Make It Big gathered pace, arrived as Michael consolidated his role as songwriter-in-chief and front-line bandleader.
Michael wrote and produced the track himself, leaning into buoyant handclaps, call-and-response backing vocals, and a polished Motown inflection that fit radio like a glove. The record’s timing dovetailed with Wham!’s global ambitions, its easy glide masking the authorial control that would soon define Michael’s solo era.
The video opens with about a minute of the band talking under images of Chinese people and countryside. MTV, worried about short attention spans in the pre-“Thriller” era, wanted the spoken intro cut; manager Simon Napier-Bell refused, and the network aired the full version. As he liked to note, securing that win with MTV proved far simpler than negotiating with the Chinese authorities around the group’s landmark visit.
“Freedom” was issued in the UK on 1 October 1984 and spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Official Singles Chart that month. Stateside, where the single rolled out in 1985, it climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 that September. The song became the glossy, feel-good bridge between the neon bounce of “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and the winter ubiquity of “Last Christmas,” reinforcing Wham!’s command of both chart and club.
In the duo’s arc, it stands as the moment Michael’s composer-producer instincts met mass-market uplift, aligning the group with a cosmopolitan movement of ’80s British pop that borrowed American soul grammar while keeping a distinctly UK sense of hook and humor. Its China-framed promo further burnished Wham!’s image as international emissaries of pop modernity.
