Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band – Against The Wind
Bob Seger’s “Against the Wind”, released April 1980 as the second single from the album of the same name, stands as a reflective heartland rock staple — a nostalgic ballad capturing life’s passage, resilience, and the push to maintain integrity amid change.
Crafted over a two-year period during the making of Seger’s eleventh album, this mid-tempo soft rock ballad was recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, under the production of Bill Szymczyk and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Eagles co-frontman Glenn Frey contributed backing vocals, reuniting with his former Detroit scene peer.
Seger explained that the song drew metaphor from his experience as a high school cross-country runner — “running against the wind” — symbolizing the struggle to push forward while staying true to oneself. He later described it as emotionally connected to “Night Moves” and “Brave Strangers”, reflective pieces about growth and time.
The video associated with this song comes from Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band’s 1980 performance at the Capital Centre in Largo, Maryland, filmed during the Against the Wind tour. The show featured a powerhouse setlist including “Turn the Page,” “Mainstreet,” “Night Moves,” and “Old Time Rock and Roll.” This performance captures Seger at the height of his arena-rock success and remains a fan-favorite live document of the era.
On the US Billboard Hot 100, “Against the Wind” peaked at #5, becoming the highest-charting single from the album.
The album Against the Wind became Seger’s only #1 LP, spending six weeks atop the Billboard 200 in 1980, knocking Pink Floyd’s The Wall from the spot. It was later certified 5× Platinum in the U.S. and earned Seger a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
“Against the Wind” is often recognized for its mature introspection and craftsmanship. The Highwaymen — Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson — covered the song on their 1985 debut album, fittingly echoing the line “Let the cowboys ride!” The track has also been revisited by Garth Brooks and Brooks & Dunn, extending its life across genres.
