The song that saved Thin Lizzy’s career almost didn’t make the record. As the Irish band assembled Jailbreak in early 1976 — under real pressure, two straight commercial failures behind them and their label’s patience nearly gone — The Boys Are Back in Town was very nearly cut from the running order. It stayed. Within months it was the biggest hit the band would ever have, and it did something almost no British or Irish act managed: it broke in America first.

Phil Lynott wrote it, and it carries everything that made him one of rock’s great frontmen: a storyteller’s eye, a swaggering warmth, and a cast of characters who feel like people you’ve met. The lyric’s exact origin has never been pinned down — theories point to a Manchester crew, to Dublin pub culture, to friends drifting home — and Lynott seemed content to let it stay universal. What’s certain is the sound wrapped around it: the twin-lead guitar harmony of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, locked in tight over Brian Downey’s drums, a signature that would echo through Iron Maiden and half the metal bands that followed.

Released as a single in April 1976 from the album recorded at London’s Ramport Studios with producer John Alcock, it climbed to No. 8 in the UK and topped the chart in the band’s native Ireland. But America was the surprise. The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 on May 15, 1976 — two full weeks before it charted in Britain — after breaking out of KSAN in San Francisco and spreading coast to coast. It reached No. 12, the band’s biggest American hit, and carried Jailbreak to gold. The record won the 1976 NME Award for Best Single, and decades later Rolling Stone placed it among the greatest songs ever recorded.

The break that America nearly gave them

The momentum should have made them stars in the States, and it nearly did. Then Lynott contracted hepatitis, forcing the cancellation of a crucial US tour supporting Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, and the window narrowed. Thin Lizzy remained a formidable band for years after — but that specific American breakthrough never fully returned.
