Brook Benton – Rainy Night In Georgia
“Rainy Night in Georgia” was written by Tony Joe White in 1967, inspired not in Georgia but in Texas, where he had been living for about eight months. White recalled hearing Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode to Billie Joe” on the radio and realizing how powerful a simple, real story could be in song. “I thought, how real! And if I ever decided to write a song, I’d write something real and something that I knew about. I knew about rainy nights, and within about two weeks the song was laid down,” he later said.
Two years later, Brook Benton recorded the song at Criteria Studios in Miami with producer Arif Mardin. Released in December 1969 on Cotillion Records and included on his album Brook Benton Today, Benton’s version became the definitive recording. Supported by lush strings, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Billy Carter on organ, and Toots Thielemans on harmonica, the single was a soulful comeback for Benton.
In 1970, the song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Best Selling Soul Singles chart, climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and peaked at No. 2 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It sold over one million copies and was certified gold, reestablishing Benton as a major artist.
The combination of White’s vivid imagery and Benton’s warm, emotive delivery turned “Rainy Night in Georgia” into a lasting standard. Its portrayal of loneliness, longing, and reflection resonated with audiences then and continues to resonate today. Rolling Stone ranked it #498 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
