They are, by the numbers, one of the most successful rock acts of the twenty-first century — arenas, multiplatinum albums, a song (“How You Remind Me”) that defined a whole era of radio. They are also, by reputation, the internet’s most reliable punching bag, a band whose name became a punchline. “Rattle the Cage” is the lead single from Everything Under the Sun, Nickelback’s eleventh studio album, due October 30, 2026, and their first release for Virgin Music Group. It’s also their first new music since 2022’s Get Rollin’, and it arrives with a notable guest: John 5, the veteran guitarist known for his work with Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, and Mötley Crüe, who tears through a thrashing solo. The song sits firmly on the heavier end of the band’s range — metallic riffs, pummeling drums from Daniel Adair, and Chad Kroeger’s familiar rasp pitched into an unusually low, growling register. Kroeger has described it plainly as a song about going to a hard-rock show and letting out all your aggression and frustration, and it plays exactly that way: built for a room full of people who came to yell.

The most hated band that everybody bought

What makes Nickelback interesting in 2026 isn’t just the music — it’s that they’ve learned to hold their contradiction with a straight face and a shrug. For years the online consensus treated them as a symbol of everything bland about corporate rock, even as their records kept selling and their tours kept selling out. A new chapter, thirty years in

From humble beginnings in the small town of Hanna, Alberta, Nickelback — Chad Kroeger, guitarist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger, and drummer Daniel Adair — built one of the most commercially remarkable careers in modern rock, and more than three decades in, they show no signs of quietly retiring. The band comes into this new era on a genuine high, having just completed the most successful tour of their career. Kroeger has promised that Everything Under the Sun shows “every side of the band,” from their hardest material to songs that take chances, and “Rattle the Cage” is deliberately the loudest possible door-opener. Love them or hate them — and plenty of people still line up on both sides — Nickelback have never sounded less concerned with the verdict.
