Musically, the song’s structure defies pop convention: shifting tempos, tape-spliced takes in different keys, and layered instrumentation that includes Mellotron, brass, cello, and backward effects. George Martin famously combined two separate takes—one slow and hazy, the other faster and brighter—by altering pitch and tempo to align their tonal centers. Released alongside its companion “Penny Lane,” the single symbolized the group’s move away from live performance toward recording as pure composition.
