Blake Shelton – The More I Drink
Neon lights, a bad idea getting worse, and a hook you can’t shake: Blake Shelton’s barroom spiral in late-2000s Nashville.
By summer 2007, country radio was tilting toward rowdy barroom stories and winked-at regrets. Blake Shelton leaned in with “The More I Drink”, the second single from Pure BS—a comic confession about bravado curdling into bruises once the rounds keep coming. Written by David Lee Murphy, Chris DuBois, and Dave Turnbull, it framed Shelton as the guy who can laugh at his own worst night and still make last call sound catchy.
On record, producer Brent Rowan builds a tight, honky-tonk-leaning groove: bright piano stabs, twangy guitars, and a swaggering backbeat that never drags. Shelton sings it bone-dry and deadpan, letting the band do the mug-sliding while he lands the punchlines. The mix leaves air for crowd-shout moments in the chorus, so it plays like a single and a Saturday-set staple at the same time.
The writing runs on a simple comic engine—cause, effect, denial. Each verse nudges the night further off the rails (more drinks, worse choices), while the refrain flips logic into a boast: the more he drinks, the more he… well, you know. Short, percussive phrases lock to the snare, and the cadence makes the hook feel inevitable—built for bar-wide sing-alongs.
Roman White’s video doubles down on the story: it cold-opens with arrests after a bar brawl, then rewinds through peacocking, flirting, and all the bad decisions that got everyone there. Cut between booking-room shots and a rowdy stage performance, it was filmed in Watertown, Tennessee—small-town neon cast as a character—and it nails the “we’ve all been there” punchline without moralizing.
On the charts, it played the long game: a months-long run on Hot Country Songs, peaking inside the Top 20, and a crossover nibble on the Bubbling Under. More importantly, it became a live jolt, bridging Shelton’s early wryness to the arena-size sing-backs he’d ride into the 2010s.
